Apart from making a semifinal appearance in her home tournament at St. Petersburg, where she defeated a tired but newly crowned world #1 Wozniacki, Daria Kasatkina’s season has been nothing less than a disappointment. She has three first-round losses at Brisbane, Sydney, and Doha, along with a second-round exit at the Australian Open at the hands of Magda Linette.
However, playing in the first round of Dubai, she defeated a former champion of Dubai, Aga Radwanska, in straight sets, which would be a boost to her confidence. Radwanska did not make it easy for Kasatkina as she broke back the Russian every time Kasatkina tried to run away with a lead. But eventually, Kasatkina was able to serve out both sets and seal the match just under two hours.
Johanna Konta knocked out Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets, 7-6 6-2 to make her debut at the Dubai Tennis Championships in a winning fashion, helped along the way by the Russian’s 40 unforced errors. This win also extends Konta’s record against the Russian opponents, winning seven out of the last eight encounters.
Konta, the 2016 Australian Open semifinalist, had a disappointing Melbourne stay this year after she was ousted in straight sets by Bernarda Pera, the debutante of the Australian Open, just in the second round. However, she returned the favor to Pera in the first round match at the Qatar Open last week.
Konta had won her only previous meeting against Kasatkina which came in the quarterfinals at Sydney in 2017 when Konta defeated the young Russian in straight sets. Relatively, Konta is the one who is playing with more confidence in her game, but Kasatkina is not too far behind, and she will ensure that this match is well-fought.
Johanna Konta is the most aggressive player in this match. The British is going to create more chances in the game and will win the victory.
