Yannick Maden made the most of his second chance by defeating the crowd favorite Marton Fucsovics in the first round of ATP Budapest, 4-6 6-3 6-2.
Earlier this week, the German defeated Sebastian Ofner in QR1 before losing to Lorenzo Sonego in the final qualifying match. But he was awarded a lucky loser spot in the main draw.
The win against Marton Fucsovics was only Maden’s first main draw win on tour this season and second tour-level main draw win of his career. He previously won a main draw match in 2017 at Metz, where he defeated Nicolas Kicker as a lucky loser but lost to Denis Istomin in the second round.
Though Maden has been very consistent with his results over the past four seasons, his performance during the matches can be notoriously inconsistent. The German has the habit of throwing away superior positions during the match and also fighting back from the hopeless positions.
Yannick Maden will be Maximilian Marterer’s first German opponent since defeating Cedrik Marcel Stebe in the first round of the Australian Open 2018.

Marterer ended his three-match losing run with a comeback performance against the struggling Viktor Troicki in the first round, 3-6 6-4 6-4.
The 22-year-old Marterer won 22 matches on clay last season, including two clay Challenger titles at Eckental Challenger (indoor clay) and Banja Luka Challenger (clay).
