Milos Raonic registered his biggest win since making the comeback from right calf injury when he defeated the world #4 Grigor Dimitrov in the second round of Madrid Masters, 7-5 3-6 6-3.
This will be the Canadian’s fourth R16 appearance in a Masters 1000 event this season. He defeated Marcos Baghdatis (walkover) and Jeremy Chardy at this stage of Indian Wells and Miami but was forced to pull out of his R16 match against Marin Cilic in Monte Carlo (right knee).
The former world #3 Milos Raonic’s record in this stage (R16) of the Madrid Masters stands at 2/2. However, he lost the recent R16 match to David Goffin here in 2017.
Milos Raonic will now meet the talented teenager and compatriot Denis Shapovalov for the first time, “I think he is incredibly talented, very explosive. He can do a lot of incredible things. He had been playing great on tour since the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year. He has had some great wins. It is going to be a very difficult match.” – Raonic ahead of his R16 match.
Denis Shapovalov scored two solid wins over Tennys Sandgren (straight sets) and Benoit Paire (three sets) to record his career-best result in a clay tour-level event.
Before entering the Madrid Masters, the last time Shapovalov won a match on clay was back in 2016, at Moscow Challenger (against Alexandre Sidorenko).
This is the Next Gen Star’s second R16 match in an ATP Masters 1000 event this season (lost to Born Coric in Miami) and third of his career (defeated Rafael Nadal in Montreal 2017).
Though Shapovalov is hugely talented and has got the potential to achieve big at this level, facing a top player (despite his recent injury issues) on his least preferred surface makes this a difficult match for the teenager.
