Stefanos Tsitsipas survived an early scare as he had to fight back from a set down against lucky loser JP Smith to register his first main draw win at ATP Hertogenbosch, 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Only once in his career, the Greek teenager had managed to win back-to-back matches in a grass tournament, in Wimbledon 2017, when he defeated Santiago Giraldo, Yannick Hanfmann and Joris De Loore in the qualifying stages.
However, the 2016 Junior Wimbledon doubles champion Tsitsipas achieved many personal milestones in 2018 when he made the quarterfinal at Doha and Dubai, semifinal at Estoril and final at Barcelona. He will now be hoping to do the same in the next 30-40 days on grass as well.
Malek Jaziri registered his first win on grass since Nottingham 2016 (vs. James Ward) when he defeated Max Purcell in the first round of ATP Hertogenbosch on Tuesday, 6-2 6-3.
With this comfortable win over Max Purcell, the Tunisian took his season tally to 29 wins and 16 losses (29/16). These are impressive numbers considering he could win only two matches on tour in the opening two months of the season.
Making his grass court debut at ITF Great Britain in 2011, Malek Jaziri went on to win the title, and since then, he has played 19 tournaments on this surface but has never progressed beyond the second round (or the round of 16).
These two players met once in the quarterfinal of ATP Dubai earlier this season when Malek Jaziri edged the closely fought three set match. Expect this to be a close contest once again with both players having an equal chance of winning it.
