In the lower tableau, Simona Halep from Romania is a big favorite. In the round of eight there is a duel between Anett Kontaveit and Simona Halep.
The Estonian is still considered a kind of nobody for many tennis fans, but this impression is a bit deceptive, because the 24-year-old is already number 31 in the WTA world rankings. In 2017 she celebrated 46 victories, a year later there were only 34 successes before she ended the year 2019 with 28 successes. However, this impression is a bit deceptive, because Kontaveit has now established itself on the WTA Tour and no longer plays on the second-class level.
In April of last year Kontaveit was already number 14 in the women’s world. However, this was followed by some minor physical problems before she had to end her season prematurely due to injuries at the 2019 US Open. That’s why Kontaveit slipped back a bit and can only be found in 31st place. In the WTA Live Ranking, she climbed back to 21st place.
Her game against Swiss Belinda Bencic was absolutely impressive so far. In a hurry (49 minutes) she shot Bencic 6: 0 and 6: 1 from the square. Kontaveit acted extremely powerfully, beat several winners and made hardly any unintentional mistakes. An outstanding performance, which she was not able to confirm in the round of 16.
The match against the 18-year-old Polish Iga Swiatek was completely different, because after the rapid pace a marathon developed. After 2:42 hours played, Kontaveit’s greatest success was certain. The dominance, lightness and flawlessness were no longer to be felt. However, Kontaveit was lucky that her opponent made even more simple mistakes (51!) And thus cheated into the quarterfinals.
The Bencic game has been the big exception so far this year, otherwise we would not rate the Estonian top form. Sharma, Sorribes-Tormo and Swiatek are not necessarily the strongest opponents. A significantly stronger player is now waiting in the quarter-finals and we therefore advise against Kontaveit and Halep not to bet on the Estin.

Simona Halep has already won the French Open (2018) and Wimbledon (2019). On the hard court, however, the now 28-year-old knew how to convince far less. With a knockout round in Melbourne and a second-round loss in Flushing Meadows, the two Grand Slam tournaments on hard court were disappointing last season.
Even before the start of this year’s Australian Open, doubts about its shape were entirely justified. At the only preparatory tournament in Adelaide, she had to surrender to Aryna Sabalenka in two sentences. Since then, however, she has been in excellent shape and literally walked into the group of the last eight.
In the course of the tournament so far, she has not had to give up a set and celebrates smooth wins in two sets against Jennifer Brady, Harriet Dart, Yulia Putintseva and Elise Mertens. Although she has played most games in the tournament against Mertens so far (eight), the performance was absolutely outstanding. The official statistics show just eight of the uncommon errors.
Once again, number four on the seed list proved its reputation as an outstanding counter player. Halep acts like a rubber wall in phases and brought back almost every ball, however impossible. Even determining the pace is certainly not one of her strengths. But with the persistent way of playing she has already pulled the tooth of many opponents.
Given the strong performances in Melbourne, leaving the quarter-finals would definitely be a big surprise. Between Kontaveit and Halep, the prediction for the favorite Romanian is obvious.
