Aryna Sabalenka dropped just four games against Polona Hercog (6-3 6-1) to register her third quarterfinal (all International) of 2018. This is the least amount of games she lost en route to a win so far in 2018, since defeating Kovinic (6-1 6-0) at Shenzhen.
Sabalenka registered her best win-by-ranking on tour by defeating #18 Kuznetsova (6-4 6-3) at the Indian Wells, last month. However, she is yet to win three matches in a row since winning the WTA $125k tournament at Mumbai at the end of last year.
The Belarusian had never played a WTA main draw match on clay before arriving at Lugano (1-2 in qualifying rounds). Moreover, by winning one more match, she will assume the role of Belarusian #1, surpassing Sasnovich, who lost in the second round of this tournament.
Camila Giorgi Preview
Camila Giorgi produced yet another strong showing at Lugano as she spent just 67 minutes on court to dispatch Van Uytvanck, 6-2 6-1. The Italian, who went down an early break in the first set, created 12 break point chances for herself (converted seven).
This win follows her 6-3 6-2 win over Kr. Pliskova in the first round, where she won 63% of the Czech’s second serves and went 6/18 break points. Giorgi kicked off her clay season with wins over #205 Soler Espinosa and #24 Gavrilova at Charleston last week.
This is a surprising run from Giorgi since playing on clay has rarely been her strong suit. Prior to this week, she had reached four clay quarterfinals in her career (all Internationals, most recent one is 2017 Prague), but suffered losses in all of them.
