Kevin Anderson fought back from a set down against Pablo Carreno Busta to book his quarterfinal spot at the Indian Wells for the first time since 2014. As usual, he served a healthy number of aces (16) and won over 80% of his first serve points to emerge as the winner.
The win against Pablo Carreno Busta was the South African’s 17th win of the season (17/4), and he has now won 11 of his last 12 matches, with the only loss coming against Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of Acapulco.
Twice in his career, Kevin Anderson has made the quarterfinal at the Indian Wells (nine appearances) but ended up losing both of those encounters, against Tomas Berdych in 2013 and Roger Federer in 2014.
The World #8’s most recent quarterfinal match in an ATP Masters event came at Montreal in 2017 where he lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets, after defeating Pablo Carreno Busta in the second round.
Borna Coric Preview
Borna Coric was in a comfortable position, 6-2 6-6 (4-0 in the tie-break), before Taylor Fritz made a sensational comeback to force a deciding set. The American even went a break up in the third set to put more pressure on Coric, but the Croation Next Gen Star regrouped himself in time to avoid a disappointing defeat, 6-2 6-7 6-4.
This is Borna Coric’s first ever quarterfinal appearance at the Indian Wells, and third in an ATP Masters event, he lost his previous two against Dominic Thiem at Madrid 2017 and Maric Cilic in Cincinnati 2016.
Additionally, the 21-year-old Croatian lost his previous three quarterfinal matches on tour against, Roberto Bautista Agut at Dubai, Andrey Rublev at Doha and Jan Lennard Struff at Winston Salem.
