The Latvian did win something at Stuttgart last year, her second WTA doubles title, partnering with Raquel Atawo. She returns to Stuttgart this year ranked #5 and with a first-round bye, seeking her first win in singles as well as to defend the doubles title.
After winning the French Open, Ostapenko won an International event at Seoul in September as her first WTA title. Last month at Miami, she came close to winning her first Premier Mandatory but lost to another reigning slam winner Stephens in the final.

Zarina Diyas, making her first Stuttgart appearance since 2015, has secured her third win over Carina Witthoeft in the first round. Unlike her previous meetings with the German, this match was wrapped up in straight sets in just over the hour mark.
In 2015, the Kazakh was ranked near her career high position of #31, which gave her a direct entry into the Stuttgart main draw for the first time. She met Sabine Lisicki in the first round and thrashed her in front of the German crowd by winning 6-0 6-0.
