Elena Vesnina won a welcome first-round match against the Chinese #1 Peng Shuai in straight sets (6-2 7-5) in the contest that lasted just over 100 minutes. This win comes when Vesnina has lost her last three matches, against Osaka (Melbourne), Kvitova (St. Petersburg) and Blinkova (Doha).
As opposed to Ostapenko, Vesnina has a long history of playing in this tournament. She debuted here eleven years ago in 2007 and couple of years later she reached the quarterfinal, which is still her best result in this event, defeating Kuznetsova, Li Na, and Cibulkova. Vesnina has played here every year except 2016, thereby making 2018 her 11th appearance.

Vesnina defeated Ostapenko (7-5 6-0) in the first round of Madrid, a couple of years ago in 2016, long before the Latvian became a slam champion. Ostapenko is the reigning French Open champion, and Vesnina is the Indian Wells champion, but both players are struggling a lot to get on with their season and win matches in a row, making this contest closer than it is on paper.
