Frenchman Pierre Hughes Herbert faces a French test for the second time in three matches when he takes on Gael Monfils this Tuesday. After fighting back from a set down against Gilles Simon in the first round, Herbert secured a more comfortable straight sets win over Gilles Muller in the second round.
Herbert has registered his best Indian Wells result by qualifying to the third round this week. He faced a second-round exit in 2017 and a first-round exit in 2016 (as a qualifier). A win against Gael Monfils in the third round will give help him post his best ever result in an ATP Masters 1000 event.
Though Pierre Hughes Herbert made an excellent start to the season by winning ten of his opening 16 matches (10/6), he is yet to win more than two main draw matches in any of the six tournaments that he has entered so far in 2018. His best result of the season is reaching the quarterfinal at ATP Pune where he lost to Marin Cilic in straight sets.
Pierre Hughes Herbert is currently active in the doubles draw as well. The successful French pair (Herbert and Mahut) defeated Damir Dzumhur and Filip Krajinovic in the first round, 6-1 6-2.

Gael Monfils is just one win away from repeating his previous year’s result of a round of 16 appearance, where he lost to Dominic Thiem. He also reached the quarterfinal of the Indian Wells in 2016.
Monfils played out his eighth three-setter of the season (from 16 best-of-three sets matches) when he defeated John Isner in the second round. He served eight aces and saved 100% of the break point chances (7/7), including a match point in the deciding set to secure his progression, 6-7 7-6 7-5.
The last time Monfils beat Isner at the Indian Wells, he ended up losing the following match (2017), and he will be hoping to avoid a similar fate this time around.
