Irina Falconi vs Mihaela Buzarnescu Tennis Prediction
Mihaela Buzarnescu secured her first WTA win on grass after surviving Veronica Cepede Royg in the Nottingham first round. This two-hour match was forced to a third set tiebreak, in which Buzarnescu was just two points away from defeat (6-2 3-6 7-6).
The Romanian, who is the new world #30, is entering her career’s first tour-level grass swing after having a successful clay season, which included her second career final at Prague (l. Kvitova), a semifinal at Strasbourg and a fourth round at the French Open.
Irina Falconi moved into the second round after claiming her fifth win over Arina Rodionova (first on tour), defeating the Australian in an hour and 18 minutes with the scoreline of 6-4 6-1. The American won 72% behind her first serve, compared to 46% from Rodionova.
To get into the main draw of Nottingham, the former world #63 had to get through the qualifying rounds, defeating #588 Freya Christie and #365 Naiktha Bains. Falconi, the 2016 Bogota champion, has now won her first tour-level main draw match on grass since 2015 Eastbourne (second round).
The fifth seed Buzarnescu has won less than ten grass matches in her entire career in all levels. She still has a lot to prove on this surface, but going into her first meeting with Falconi, she is expected to prevail. Buzarnescu has not lost to an outside top 100 player this season.
