Maximilian Marterer, who failed to win an ATP Tour event main draw match in the past seasons has now won four of them in 2018, having previously defeated Stebe and Verdasco in Melbourne and Joao Sousa and Malek Jaziri at ATP Sofia.

Ivo Karlovic finished his 2017 season with retirement at ATP Antwerp but made a decent start to the new season by progressing to the third round at the Australian Open and quarterfinal at the New York Open.
However, the Veteran Croatian put in a weird performance during his recent straight set defeat against Denis Shapovalov at Delray Beach (R1). He created 11 break point chances during the match and could convert only one while his serve was broken twice in the match. Strangely, he squandered a 2-0* (40-0*) lead to the lose the first set 5-7.
The big-serving Karlovic has played 17 tiebreakers in his nine matches this season, and he managed to win nine of them (9/8).
Except 2016, Ivo Karlovic has entered Indian Wells every year since 2004 and making the quarterfinal once in 2011 is his best result in this event. On the positive side, only twice he faced first-round exit from those 13 appearances, in 2004 (Andrei Pavel) and 2012 (Lukasz Kubot).
