Michaela Buzarnescu has hit a wall after debuting in the Top 40 as she suffered three unexpected defeats in a row, to Van Uytvanck (6-1 6-0) at Budapest, Jennifer Brady at Indian Wells and Kirsten Flipkens at Miami.
This is the first time Buzarnescu had lost three matches in a row since October 2016 when she was still on the ITF circuit full-time and ended that season at #671.
Buzarnescu, who will turn 30 in few weeks, has never been in the main draw of a WTA clay tournament before. She came close in 2015 Bucharest when she was a set away from making it to the main draw of her home tournament.
Although, most of Buzarnescu’s wins (27) and titles (4) in 2017 on the ITF circuit have come on clay.
Vera Lapko Pick
Vera Lapko, the 19-year-old Belarusian who is ranked #132 in the world, has finally made it into the main draw of a tournament in 2018 after seven unsuccessful attempts in getting through the qualifying rounds this season.
Lapko made her first impression on the WTA tour last year in Moscow when as a qualifier, she defeated Zanevska and Gavrilova to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Irina-Camelia Begu and even forced that match into a decider.
