Mihaela Buzarnescu (31st seed ) gets her career’s first Grand Slam main draw win by defeating former #50 Vania King in straight sets, 6-3 6-3. She took an hour and 26 minutes to get the job done, hitting 18 winners and winning 70% behind first serves.
The Romanian’s previous slam main draw appearances, at 2017 US Open and 2018 Australian Open, had ended in first round losses to Caroline Wozniacki (on both occasions in straight sets).
This time last year, Buzarnescu was ranked just inside the top 400 but was on her path to finish the season inside top 70. This year, she has reached two career finals, at Hobart (l. Mertens) and Prague (l. Kvitova), to consolidate her place in top 40.
Swedish qualifier Rebecca Peterson, making her French Open main draw debut, has defeated Su-Wei Hsieh, 6-4 6-3, to get her first slam main draw win. She nearly blew a 5-1 lead in the first set and had to come back from a break down in second.
Peterson, who reached her first tour-level semifinal at Acapulco earlier this season (l. Voegele), debuted into the top 100 this month after winning the ITF $100k at Cagnes-Sur-Mer (France), defeating Yastremska in the final.
The pair has met twice in the last twelve months, at ITF Versmold (clay) in July 2017 and ITF Midland (indoor hard) in February 2018, with both the meetings won by the Romanian. The latter encounter was a close three-setter, 7-6 4-6 6-4, while the former ended 6-2 6-2.
