Naomi Osaka, the newly crowned Indian Wells champion, scored her 17th win of the season by defeating the American, Jennifer Brady, 6-4 6-4. She is one win away from matching her Charleston best result (third round, 2017).
Osaka won the biggest title of her career at the desert by defeating some big names, including three former champions of the Indian Wells, Sharapova, Radwanska, and Halep, before beating fellow 20-year-old Kasatkina in the final.
Earlier in the season, she also posted her best Australian Open result (fourth round) and a quarterfinal at Dubai.
The Japanese #1 does not have the best record on clay. In each of the last four years, she could not win more than five matches in the entire clay season. Moreover, she was on a four-match losing streak on clay before arriving at Charleston.
Laura Siegemund News
Laura Siegemund played and won her first tour-level match since the brutal knee injury she suffered at Nuremberg last year. She knocked out the 21-year-old Vikhlyantseva in straight sets, breaking the Russian’s serve five times.
Siegemund is last year’s Charleston semifinalist. She defeated V. Williams, Sevastova, Safarova and Tsurenko to secure her best result at the tournament. In 2016, she also reached the quarterfinal stage but lost to the two-time runner-up, Vesnina.
Siegemund is a clay-court specialist, to say the least. She has won 350+ career pro matches on clay, compared to just 70+ on hard-courts.
