Italy squandered a 2-0 lead to lose the tie 3-2 in their most recent meeting with France in 1996, and they have a chance to exact the revenge by scoring a comeback win this time around (1-2 down after three rubbers).

Andreas Seppi News

Andreas Seppi put in a fighting effort against Lucas Pouille in the first rubber, but that wasn’t enough for him to give an early lead for Italy, 3-6 2-6 6-4 6-3 1-6.
This rubber could be meaningless if Lucas Pouille defeats Fabio Fognini in the fourth rubber, as that will settle the tie 4-1 in favor of the defending champions, France.
Seppi is currently on a three-match losing run in this competition. Earlier this season, he lost another tight five-set match to Yuichi Sugita in the first round (Febrary 2018).
Except 2010 and 2011, Andreas Seppi has played at least one Davis Cup match every season since 2005, and except 2009 (lost to Lukas Lacko and Stan Wawrinka), he has registered at least one win in this competition in every single season. He is yet to win a Davis Cup match in 2018, and his overall W/L record in the Davis Cup stands at 18/19 (22/21 including Doubles).

Andreas Seppi News

Jeremy Chardy made a good start to the second rubber by going a set and break up early in the match (7-6 2-0) but was eventually pulled down by Fabio Fognini. It was the Frenchman’s first defeat in the Davis Cup, W/L- 5/1.
Chardy could not win back to back matches in 2018 until March, but he gathered some much-needed confidence and momentum by reaching the round of 16 at the Indian Wells and Miami Open last month.
The H2H between Italy and France is tied at 5-5 but France won their most recent meeting 3-2 in France (1996), and the home team won the last three meetings between these two nations.
Irrespective of the fourth rubber result between Fognini and Pouille, there’s a good chance for either of these players to be replaced in this final rubber of the quarterfinal clash.
