Tomas Berdych returns to Indian Wells for the 14th time in his career, and he has registered some good results here in the past. The Czech #1 made the semifinal once in 2013 (lost to Rafael Nadal) and progressed to the quarterfinal twice in 2010 and 2015.
Though Tomas Berdych has reached at least the quarterfinal in three of the four tournaments that he has entered so far in 2018, his recent performances are unconvincing. He lost the first set against Stefano Travaglia in his first round match at Marseille, was dominated by Damir Dzumhur in the following match until the Bosnian was forced to retire and gone down in straight sets to the eventual Champion Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinal.

Maximilian Marterer won the battle between two big servers to register his first ever main draw win in an ATP Masters 1000 event. The German served 20 aces and did not lose his serve (BP Saved- 2/2) before coming out on top in the match that lasted two hours and 20 minutes.
The last time Maximilian Marterer lost a second-round match was at Braunschweig challenger in July 2017, where Oscar Otte beat him in three sets.
Though both of them are big servers, Tomas Berdych might find it difficult under the desert sun considering the way he serves (high ball toss) and it will be interesting to see how he handles it.
