Alexey Vatutin will make his ATP World Tour main draw debut when he takes on Jan Lennard Struff in the first round of Marrakech this Tuesday.
After failing in the qualifying stages at a handful of tour events, the Russian defeated Enrique Lopez-Perez and Alex de Minaur (fatigued) in the qualifying stages earlier this week.
Though he made the quarterfinal at Koblenz Challenger and finished as the runner-up at Quimper Challenger in the opening two months of the new season, Vatutin faced three first-round exits from his recent three tournaments, at Zhuhai Challenger, Shenzhen Challenger, and Alicante Challenger.
Alexey Vatutin has the tendency to switch off completely at times but irrespective of that, he is an extremely talented player and has managed to win at least 50 matches in every season over the last three years. His 65 match wins in 2017 includes three ITF titles and one Challenger title (Poznan Challenger, clay).
Jan Lennard Struff News
Jan Lennard Struff made an encouraging start to the season by registering a three-set win over the former World #4 Tomas Berdych in Doha but has struggled to win matches since then. The German has lost six of his last seven matches with the only win coming against the struggling Andreas Haider Maurer in Dubai.
Struff won an epic doubles rubber against Spain in the Davis Cup three days back, 6-3 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-5, to give Germany a crucial advantage in the tie (2-1) but that wasn’t enough for the visitors to progress further.
Unlike Vatutin, Jan Lennard Struff has appeared at Marrakech once in the past (2017), and he even managed to reach the quarterfinal.
