Yannick Maden was nothing short of impressive during the qualifying stages this week as he registered two straight set wins against Viktor Galovic (6-4 6-4) and Yuki Bhambri (6-1 6-1).
The German, who has never entered ATP Dubai in his career, has now made it into the main draw of the event at the first time of asking. The two wins in the qualifying stages have taken his 2018 tally to 11 wins and five losses.
Though he has been very consistent with his results over the past four seasons, his performance during the matches can be notoriously inconsistent. The German has the habit of throwing away superior positions during the match and also fighting back from the hopeless positions.
Maden was trailing 5-7 0-3 at one stage and was three match points down at 5-7 *5-6 against Millot earlier this season (at Montpellier), yet to managed to pull off a stunning win. His match against Pospisil in Antwerp qualifiers towards the end of 2017 was an instance where he threw away a fantastic position to lose the match, Maden was 6-3 *5-2 up in the match but ended up losing 6-3 5-7 0-6.
Damir Dzumhur Tennis Pick
Damir Dzumhur retired from his quarterfinal match at Marseille last week after losing the first set tiebreaker (vs.Tomas Berdych). It wasn’t a surprise as the Bosnian has played too many matches in the past 12 months and some of them has been really tough and grueling encounters.
The retirement at Marseille last week was his second retirement of the season, having previously retired once against Alex de Minaur in the second round of ATP Sydney in January 2018.
Dzumhur progressed to the quarterfinals here in 2017 (debut) after defeating Stan Wawrinka and Marcel Granollers.
