An English week is also on the program in the motherland of football. In the Premier League, the 13th matchday of the current season will take place from Tuesday to Thursday. On Wednesday there will be a duel between Arsenal and Southampton at the Emirates Stadium. A duel that delivers the wrong omen, because the hosts are stuck in the table basement, while the guests are allowed to flirt with the top.

The English Premier League has been disappointing this season, but the Gunners are definitely at the forefront of this ranking. In the current table, the Arteta team ranks historically poorly and is only in 15th place.

The situation is completely different for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s team, who can look back on an excellent start to the season with 23 points from twelve games and are currently in fourth place. Despite the clear form advantages, the best bookmakers see Arsenal against Southampton as favourites according to current odds. Does only the “big name” speak for the Gunners? Or are there actually arguments that speak in favour of this favourite role?

Arsenal – Stats & current form

The longing for great success is clearly noticeable at Arsenal. The club still has a big name, but the performances shown are only mediocre. A look at the previous season results clearly underlines this thesis. Only four of the twelve league games were won, while the offensive around Aubameyang and Lacazette could only score ten goals. Only three teams have celebrated fewer goals this season.

More fouls than goals since the beginning of October

An incredible statistic this season also shows that the Gunners have made more false throw-ins (five) than goals have been scored (four) since the beginning of October. There is now a wide gap between claims and reality in north London. The Arteta team started the new season extremely successfully with nine points from the first four league games (the team only lost against champions Liverpool).

It is striking that the team makes life difficult for itself again and again. In any case, the team hardly has any playful means to become dangerous against low-lying opponents. In addition, the effectiveness in front of the opposing case is catastrophic. Another big problem is the lack of discipline – on Sunday evening, Granit Xhaka received a dismissal in the Gunners’ urge phase after grabbing his opponent’s neck.

Since Mikel took over Arteta last December, Arsenal has already received six (!) Dismissals – an absolute negative record.

Four home defeats in a row

Before the red card from Granit Xhaka, Arsenal played decent football against Burnley and created some top chances, but with the dismissal, the momentum completely evaporated. To make matters worse, captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang underwent an own goal after a corner kick. The Gabonese has not hit the plague on his feet for over 1,000 minutes from the game and is a symbol of the crisis. The 0: 1 against Burnley was the fourth home defeat in a row, the last time Arsenal had it in 1959!

Arguments in favour of Arsenal are by no means. Still, there is hope to stop the negative run. The memories of the Premier League games on Wednesday evening are extremely positive, in the last 21 Wednesday home games, Arsenal celebrated 14 wins, drew six times and suffered only one defeat. Between Arsenal and Southampton, around 2.20 is offered for the host’s prediction.

The probable lineup of Arsenal:
Leno – Tierney, Gabriel, Holding, Saka – Maitland-Niles, Elneny, Ceballos, Willian – Aubameyang, Lacazette

Southampton – Stats & current form

While Arsenal has undoubtedly been the big disappointment of the current season, Southampton is the positive counterpart. The Saints are playing the second-best season in the English upper house of football since the introduction of the three-point rule. Only in the 2014/15 season had Southampton more points (26) than currently (23) after twelve games. At that time, the season ended in seventh place.

Only one defeat in ten games

Not a single Saints fan thought after two matchdays that the situation would be so positive a few weeks later. With defeats against Crystal Palace and Tottenham, the start of the season was put in the sand. But since these two bankruptcies against the teams from London Southampton has won seven of the last ten league games. Only in the home game against Manchester United the team had to admit defeat 2: 3 despite a 2-0 lead.

At the weekend, Southampton celebrated a clear 3-0 win against the still unmatched bottom group Sheffield United. Due to the strong form, this was not a surprise and still a game that has to be mentioned. Ex-Stuttgart Oriel Romeu delivered his first assist in his 193rd Premier League game. Only Stephane Henchoz had to wait longer for this sense of achievement with 234 games before his first assist.

Many goals are guaranteed at the Saints

Not only the strong results this season are impressive, but also the way in which Hasenhüttl sends his team into the game. The red-whites invest a lot and are always looking for the direct way forward. Goal chances are definitely not in short supply in games with Saints participation. So far, 41 goals have been scored in twelve games, which means an average of 3.42 goals per game. Only in games with Liverpool participation have there been more goals (3.75).

In this respect, in the duel between Arsenal and Southampton, the tip on an over 2.5 or goal by both teams is quite appropriate. A little caution is advised when betting on the guest victory because both the direct comparison speaks against it and the fact that Southampton has not won any of the last 21 Wednesday away games (0-7-14 record).

The probable lineup of Southampton:
McCarthy – Bertrand, Vestergaard, Bednarek, Walker-Peters – Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Walcott – Adams, Ings

Last matches from Southampton:

Premier League
12/13 2020 Southampton 3 – 0 Sheffield United
12/07 2020 Brighton 1 – 2 Southampton
11/29 2020 Southampton 2 – 3 Manchester United
11/23 2020 Wolverhampton 1 – 1 Southampton
11/06 2020 Southampton 2 – 0 Newcastle United

Arsenal vs Southampton – Direct comparison / H2H balance

Given the season’s performances so far, there are not many arguments in favour of the Gunners at first glance. However, the direct comparison with the Saints should give Arsenal fans hope. Since November 1987 Arsenal has been unbeaten in league home games (25, 18 wins) against Southampton. Arsenal has scored points against the Saints in all 21 Premier League home games – the longest series in the English upper house of football. Last season, Alexandre Lacazette saved the point win for the Arteta-Elf with his goal to make it 2-2.

Arsenal vs Southampton Betting Predictions and Odds by PicksSoccer Experts

Purely on the basis of the results, the assessment according to the betting base odds comparison in this game is not understandable. The guests are playing a splendid season, while the home side completely disappoints. Even so, betting odds of up to 3.30 are offered for the guests between Arsenal and Southampton.

Key facts – Arsenal vs Southampton tips

  • For the first time since 1959, Arsenal have lost four league home games in a row
  • Arsenal have been unbeaten at home in the league against Southampton since November 1987
  • The Hasenhüttl team with the second-best start to the season since the introduction of the 3-point rule

The “Wednesday statistics” of the two teams are a nice gimmick, but they are certainly not as meaningful as the direct comparison. Southampton has not been able to win away at Arsenal since 1987.

The Gunners are far from being an absolute top team, but the performances shown were at times quite respectable. The often odds “knot” has to be untied, the chances of this are certainly not bad against a favourite opponent. “Auba”, Lacazette & Co have not forgotten how to play football and they manage to step out of the crisis against their favourite opponent. Six units of use are made between Arsenal and Southampton for the prediction on the home side.
