Stan Wawrinka’s fitness struggles were clearly evident when he was comprehensively beaten by Marton Fucsovics in the quarterfinal of ATP Geneva last week, including a second set bagel, 4-6 0-6.
Entering as the top seed and defending champion in Geneva (home event), Stan Wawrinka defeated Jared Donaldson in straight sets to end his four-match losing run, which also includes a retirement at Marseille (left knee).
Stan Wawrinka won his second career grand slam here at the French Open three years back. In 2015, he defeated Roger Federer in the quarterfinal and Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinal before leaving Novak Djokovic in tears at the end of the title decider, 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4.
The Swiss #2 put together some impressive performances and progressed to the final of French Open last season but was comfortably beaten by Rafael Nadal. Since losing that final, Wawrinka has played only 12 matches (between July 2017-May 2018) and managed to win just four of them (took nearly six months break for injury).

Guillermo Garcia Lopez defeated Adrian Mannarino, Calvin Hemery and very nearly defeated the top seed and eventual champion Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinal of ATP Lyon last week, 7-6 6-7 6-4.
It was the veteran Spaniard’s third quarterfinal of the season (on tour), having previously made to that stage in Rio de Janeiro (clay) and Buenos Aires (clay) earlier this season.
This is the former world #23 Garcia Lopez’s 15th consecutive appearance in the French Open and reaching the round of 16 once in 2014 is his best result in this tournament.
