NHL season start 2021: Draisaitl starts the new season as a top star
It doesn’t quite work out with the Edmonton Oilers, but Leon Draisaitl has made it onto the throne of the NHL individually.
The native of Cologne secured himself with the best season of a German player of all time – in 71 games Draisaitl scored 43 goals and 67 assists and thus an impressive 110 scorer points – several personal awards.
Draisaitl won the Art Ross Trophy for most points by a player. The German left his teammates Connor McDavid (97) and Bostons David Pastrnak (95) far behind.
This was followed by the two MVP awards for the best player in the league: Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Trophy, the former being the one with the greatest prestige.
Despite six points in four games, he could not prevent the playoff from the Chicago Blackhawks.
In the end, however, were the most important individual awards.
In his homeland, too, the achievements of the most famous US export since Dirk Nowitzki did not go unnoticed.
He was recently named Germany’s Sportsman of the Year. So he joined a list with the same Nowitzki, Sebastian Vettel, Michael Schumacher and Boris Becker.

Before the start of the NHL season in 2021: who can be dangerous for Draisaitl?
A total of four players are ahead of Leon Draisaitl at Bet-at-home before the start of the season.
They are Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Auston Matthews and Artemi Panarin.
Connor McDavid
The biggest competitor for the Hart Trophy comes from our own warehouse. Oilers captain Connor McDavid is ahead of the NHL season start in 2021 in this ranking.
It is clearly the Oilers’ number 1 centre but mostly receives as much Ice Age as Draisaitl. In addition, both are on the ice together in the power play.
While McDavid could play with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in 2021, Draisaitl can look forward to Kailer Yamamoto and compatriot Dominik Kahun. However, it is clear that it is # 97 and # 29 that make the difference in the close games anyway.
In 2020, an injury prevented McDavid from seriously endangering Draisaitl in the MVP race.
Nathan MacKinnon
Nathan MacKinnon is employed by one of the top favourites in the Stanley Cup odds.
The first row of the Colorado Avalanche is statistically the best in the NHL when it comes to MacKinnon Mikko Rantanen and Andre Burakowsky.
In the shortened 2019/20 season, the Canadian scored 93 points in 69 games.
In the playoffs he had another 25 follow in 15 games. An MVP player can hardly appear more clearly. However, the Avs seem stronger in the rest of the team before the NHL start in 2021, which could weaken MacKinnon’s chances of the individual award.
Auston Matthews
In a completely Canadian division, Auston Matthews can prove himself with the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 70 games he reached only 80 points last year (6 in 5 playoff games).
Matthews plays in North America’s most important ice hockey market, which has been waiting for a Stanley Cup since 1967.
In the first row, the American Mitch Marner knows next to him. Old star Joe Thornton could fill the space on the left-wing. Many points should therefore also be possible in 2021. However, whether it is enough for better NHL Hart Trophy odds is questionable.
Artemi Panarin
Artemi Panarin is clearly employed by the weakest of the named teams. The Russian has been a reliable point supplier since making his NHL debut in 2015.
In 2019/20 he first appeared for the Original Six franchise New York Rangers. 95 points in 69 games were an extremely strong result.
After the Rangers won the Draft Lottery and Alexis Lafrenière made his way to New York, the team could quickly see a positive development again.
If the Rangers exceed the experts’ expectations and Panarin collects a lot of points, the Hart Trophy odds should drop even more.
The personal Draisaitl outlook for the NHL season 2021
Leon Draisaitl will expect similar values as last in the NHL season 2021. Of course, the limitation of the game plan means that the Oilers will only be active 56 times in the main round.
Extrapolated from the values of the past values, Draisaitl would have to collect around 87 points for a similarly strong year. An ambitious goal that the Cologne resident will undoubtedly face.
The experts also give their predictions with regard to the statistics that can be achieved year after year. Rotowire sees the German at 79 points (34 + 45). ESPN, meanwhile, lists Draisaitl as # 1 in their NHL Fantasy Preview across the league. At Daily Faceoff (74 points), only McDavid is ahead of his teammate.
So it can be exciting to see what Leon Draisaitl can achieve individually in 2021.
Basically, the experts expect its production to level off a little. However, Draisaitl has already refuted negative assessments by experts several times in the NHL.

The big goal that surpasses all individual awards is of course this one legendary cup. But can the Oilers really win the Stanley Cup?
Some other teams are rated a lot higher than the Oilers before the NHL season starts in 2021.
The reason for the high odds lies mainly in the depth of the Oilers squad.

While the offensive is carried by the top 2 ranks anyway, things look less rosy in defence. The young Darnell Nurse is supposed to lead the team here but often has to be led himself.
After all, there are also problems in the goal. Mikko Koskinen and Mike Smith are solid options, but not game-changing options. However, the latter is particularly important in the playoffs.
In this respect, it can be assumed that the Oilers will reach the NHL playoffs with Leon Draisaitl, but run the risk of being eliminated early again.
Until the weaknesses in GM Ken Holland’s squad have been resolved, Draisaitl will have to be content with individual awards.
