Radsport Digital Swiss 5: favorites, bets & odds

Who are the Digital Swiss 5 favorites?

With the Digital Swiss 5, international cycling is entering virtual new territory. As the first major tour, this year’s edition of the Tour de Suisse will be completely digital. The professionals of numerous teams of the UCI World Tour compete over five daily sections by mastering original sections of the Swiss tour.

They complete the respective course on their bikes in their own four walls and the personal achievements on the “role” are electronically brought together on a platform of the Czech provider ROUVY in cooperation with Velon. An experiment of this kind was dared this year as part of the one-day classic of the Tour of Flanders a few weeks ago.

The Belgian Olympic champion of 2016, Greg van Avermaet, who is known to be a classic specialist, prevailed there. Read on past victories in races like Paris-Roubaix or Gent-Wevelgem.

The digital Swiss 5 virtual cycling race will be broadcast live by various television channels, including SRF2 or BBC Sport, via web livestream. Victory on the first section between Agarn and Leukerbad was secured by Australian Rohan Dennis from Ineos last Wednesday.

In the following text, we took a closer look at the upcoming stages and analyzed who can be counted among the digital Swiss 5 favorites from the wide-ranging peloton. It should be noted, however, that the teams only ever start three drivers per day and the selection can be changed after each race.

Radsport Digital Swiss 5 – factors for successful betting

Even if the technical possibilities are far advanced these days, they do not allow an identical representation of the “real” conditions. Various criteria such as the weight of the driver when climbing are included, but other no less decisive criteria such as slipstream or meteorological influences are no longer applicable.

Digital racing situation has the character of a time trial

The starting point for a virtual race can best be compared to a time trial. If you always perform well in the fight against the clock, this variant can always be considered a hot candidate for victory – except for the mirrored mountain stages.

Virtual / digital cycling races: information, rules & mode

The drivers master the stages in the “home office”
Inclines, your own body weight and many other factors are included
The distances are significantly shorter (travel time by one hour)
Time trial character at every stage
There are only three drivers per team, who can change daily

Evidence of this assessment was provided by the first day of the Digital Swiss 5. On this day Dennis Rohan from Down Under, a proven time trial driver, won the world championship title in this discipline in the past two years, although the stage was quite demanding.

After all, there was a mountain arrival and almost 1,200 vertical meters were overcome to the finish in Leukerbad.

What are the drivers’ challenges?

One of the special challenges of virtual races is the short duration of the races. The track lengths are very short and the race takes around an hour. As a result, the drivers are challenged tactically and physically very intensively in a short period of time.

Who is one of the Digital Swiss 5 favorites?

  • Stage 1: Agarn – Leukerbad
  • Length: 26.6 kilometers
  • Altitude difference: 1,192

Winner: 🇦🇺 Rohan Dennis (Ineos)

  • 2nd stage: Frauenfeld – Frauenfeld
  • Length: 46 kilometers
  • Altitude difference: 180

Winner: 🇨🇭 Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ)

Local hero Stefan Küng wins ahead of Italian Filippo Ganna from Ineos and Michael Matthews (Sunweb) from Australia. The latter driver prevails in a sprint against Belgian starter Greg van Avermaet (Deceuninck-Quick-Step).

A real flat stage will be held on the second day of the Digital Swiss 5. On the circuit around Frauenfeld, the capital of the canton of Thurgau and starting point of the edition next year, almost 50 kilometers will be completed – with only 180 meters of altitude on the plan.

The race has four laps and the time trial specialists with sprinter qualities are of course among the digital Swiss 5 favorites in the betting odds. However, the opening winner Dennis Rohan will not start this time, which means that a Digital Swiss 5 favorite for the day’s victory will be lost.

At the top of the Unibet odds for the second stage is the Belgian Greg van Avermaet, who, as described, won the virtual edition of the Tour of Flanders and has thus proven that he can cope well with this format.

We also trust the Flemish professional cyclists to take another victory and choose it for our cycling value tip today.

Radsport Digital Swiss 5 – 2nd stage on April 23rd, 2020 – Odds

Betting Prediction: 🇮🇪Sam Bennet
Odds: 8.00
Betting Prediction: 🇧🇪Greg van Avermaet
Odds: 8.00
Betting Prediction: 🇨🇭 Stefan Küng
Odds: 12.00
Betting Prediction: 🇦🇺 Michael Matthews
Odds: 13.00

  • 3rd stage: Fiesch – Nufenen Pass
  • Length: 33.1 kilometers
  • Altitude difference: 1,512

In the third stage, the highest road pass in the country is passed in the form of the Nufenen Pass. On the finish slope alone, the drivers have to master more than 1,100 meters of altitude, which is why the day section can be described as the “king’s stage”.

Mountain goats such as last year’s Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic from Slovenia or Frenchman Julian Alaphillipe can therefore be considered for Swiss Digital 5 bets for this stage.

  • Stage 4: Oberlangenegg – Langnau
  • Length: 36.8 kilometers
  • Altitude difference: 444

Only around a quarter of yesterday’s number of meters in altitude is planned for the fourth stage between Oberlangegg and Langnau. The route is laid out very flat across the virtual Emmental. The Schallenberg alone at the start of the race requires more effort.

In the Swiss Digital 5 odds, the time trial specialists should once again be seen as the hottest candidates for the day’s victory on this day.

  • Stage 5: Camperia – Disentis-Sedrun
  • Length: 36 kilometers
  • Altitude difference: 950

The final fifth day is a bit more mountainous. The preliminary decision at this stage is unquestionably made at the Lukmanier Pass. This is conquered in the middle of the race, but its rise begins shortly after the start. It represents the main task of today’s race. Classic drivers and mountain fleas should come into play again.
