It was a typical Maden performance as he threw away a lead in the first set, saved multiple match points in the second set tiebreaker and saved a handful of break points in the third set before sealing the progression, 4-6 7-6 6-2.
Entering the main draw of Budapest as a lucky loser last week, Yannick Maden registered his maiden win in a clay tour-level event and made his way to the quarterfinal, where he lost to the eventual runner-up, John Millman.
Before Budapest, the only other clay tour-level event the German entered was ATP Munich in 2017, where he failed in the qualifying stages against Jozef Kovalik.
