Williams has won the Miami Open a total of three times. In the finals of those title runs, she defeated Anna Kournikova in 1998, Serena Williams in 1999 and Jennifer Capriati in 2001.
Since then, she has reached the final of Miami just one more time, in 2010, but lost to Kim Clijsters (6-2 6-1). Last year, she reached her first Miami semifinal since 2010 but lost to the eventual champion, Johanna Konta.

Natalia Vikhlyantseva won her first main draw match of the season, by defeating fellow Russian, former world #2 and 2009 champion Zvonareva in the first round of Indian Wells. However, she was quickly subdued by Goerges in the following round.
She is having a better week at Miami, winning three matches (two in the qualifyings), including the first round win over Rebecca Peterson, 7-5 6-1.
Vikhlyantseva appeared at the Miami Open main draw in 2015 (debut) and 2017, with wildcards. However, after failing to defend her St. Petersburg semifinal points, she is forced to play the qualifying rounds this time around.
